Today, the Forum for Women Leaders in Sport in the Americas, organized by the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Peruvian Olympic Committee (POC), with the purpose of contributing to prepare the participants to occupy, in the immediate future, elected and management positions and/or to prepare other women to take part in their organization’s activities; as well as to promote women’s empowerment and gender equity.
Veda Bruno-Victor, PASO Executive Committee Member, opens the Forum for Women Leaders in Sport in the Americas
Veda Bruno-Victor, Member of the PASO Executive Committee, began the opening remarks with words by Rigoberta Menchú, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1992 and the Prince of Asturias Award for International Cooperation in 1998: “A woman with imagination not only knows how to plan the life of a family and a society, but also the future of the Millennium”.
She conveyed to the participants wishes of success from the PASO President, Dr. Julio C. Maglione and made reference to the efforts carried out by both the IOC and PASO to foster participation of women in sport, not only at a competitive level, but also in its management.
“Besides offering role models, sport is an efficient platform to provide leadership capabilities. Strength, perseverance, commitment, team spirit, solidarity and respect are all essential values in sport and in seeking gender equity and empowering of women. The potential of sport to contribute to social, economic and political empowerment of women is clear”, she pointed out.
She referred to the increase in the number of women that currently occupy management positions in National Olympic Committees and PASO Working Commissions, making a calling to continue working in this sense and take as much advantage as possible from the information received through the Forum.
The Forum for Women Leaders in Sport in the Americas will be held on November 28th thru the 30th, facilitated by professional coaches and including work dynamics.
