The President of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) and also head of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO), Uruguayan Julio Cesar Maglione, asserted today, after the Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), that he expects American Michael Phelps will be the star of the Games that will begin this Friday in Rio.
"I expect Phelps will once again be the great star of these Games”, the director said about the American swimmer, who has won a record number of Olympic medals, a total of 22, after having succeeded in the last three editions of the Games.
The Uruguayan director stands firm before critics regarding collective doping sanctions.
"We were very clear about it. We have been critical and will continue being critical. I am worried about doping, but we have been critical regarding certain conclusions WADA made”, Maglione stated.
"It is very clear for us that clean athletes have to participate and that is why we have defended a number of swimmers and athletes that, luckily, are going to participate”, he added.
He also defended from the critics received due to swimming’s late schedule in the Rio 2016 Games.
"Schedules were agreed according to the request of television broadcasters. The schedules in Rio are a requirement of television”, he explained. (AFP)
